Useful and Recommended Links

Here is a listing of some links that we find useful. You may or may not agree with our choices, and our lawyers tell us that we warrant and guarantee precisely nothing that you may find either here on our site or on any linked site you may travel to from here. That said, what we have tried to do here is to list some purely prejudicial favorites and some link-filled sites which can help you to enhance your knowledge of books and manuscripts. There is no substitute, however, for going to libraries to look at and read books and documents, attending Rare Book School (see below), and taking part in the activities (including gossip) of book-related professional associations.

The Book Collector The Book Collector "deals with all aspects of books, ancient and modern; with libraries, the book trade and book collecting." And part of its preeminence is the splendid thinking and writing of its editor, Nicolas Barker.

The Bibliographical Society of America Join it. Learn what bibliography is, if you don't know already. Also, "Bibliograpy on the Web," the section with links maintained by Pasco and Jean Gasbarro, is very useful.

Rare Book School If you have any serious interest in books and bibliography, you should enroll for at least one course here. The teaching is superb, and it is one of the few places where academics, librarians, collectors, dealers, and practitioners of various book-related skills assemble and enrich each other's knowledge and points-of-view.

Maine Antique Digest Subscribe to this if you have any interest at all in the arts, antiques, collecting, etc. We wouldn't be without it.

Antiques Trade Gazette A good way to get a sense of the book trade and of the trade in general in England is through this trade journal.

A Little Bit of Own-Horn-Blowing Take a look at the magnificent group of library exhibition catalogues that won the Leab award during the first 10 years of the award's existence. Moreover, John Nick Pull has designed beautiful Web pages to show off these catalogues. If you happen to be a library, and if you have exhibitions, either physical or electronic, follow the links to see how you can enter the current competitions for these awards.
